I have this “hero version” of myself that lives entirely in my head right before a meeting starts.

In that version, I’m a total powerhouse. I’m authoritative, I’m crisp, and I’m about to deliver an intro so commanding people might actually want to stand up and cheer. Then the “Join” button turns blue. And suddenly… I’m just Wayne… or Jeff.

There’s usually a pretty massive gap between the cinematic guy I’ve prepped in my mind and the actual human in the red polo just trying not to stumble over his own name. For a long time, I really beat myself up over that. I figured I needed to close that gap to be a “successful” partner solutions architect. But honestly? Partners don’t usually want to work with a movie character anyway. They want an authentic person, even a person who occasionally glitches during his or her own introduction.

Give yourself some grace if your internal monologue is a lot more epic than your actual output today. You’re doing fine. Who else feels like they’re cosplaying for the first five minutes of every meeting?
